Cedar Breaks National Monument

Wednesday, October 5

We left Mesquite, Nevada this morning in the rain thinking today would be just a driving day of about six hours to put us near Arches National Park, Utah for Thursday.  The storm coming down from Alaska that brought snow to Yosemite, possible wind and rain to Death Valley and sand storms to Arizona is the same storm blanketing our planned path with rain and snow for the next couple of days.

While looking at the map we realized Cedar Break National Monument was not too far out of our way.  The literature we read on the area spoke of a drive through that we thought would be doable even in the rain. The skies were brightening as we began the 10,000 ft climb to Cedar Breaks.  The scenery was very different than the red Arizona earth we had just been passing by.  There were actually some hard wood trees changing colors and we were excited to see what lie ahead even though it began raining again.

every park we've been in has signs like this

that's snow in the picture
By the time we were half way to the summit the rain had turned to snow and the temperature dropped below freezing.   After experiencing what happens at these high altitudes, our better judgment had us turn around and head back down the winding road.

As we descended the temperature began to climb and the snow returned to rain.
We continued on I 15 and I 70 to Green River, Utah in the rain.

After thinking how lucky we have been that neither of us has had any health issues along the way, John came down with a cold and by the time we got to Green River he was in desperate need of a hot shower and rest .
